Shin Hak-Gene

Abstract
The present study empirically confirmed Korean elder¡¯s ageism experience on suicidal thought and mediating effect of hopelessness and depression. To investigate causalities of factors, we conveniently collected 309 samples from 16 Gyungrodangs evenly scattered in J-city and 291 samples, satisfied analysis conditions, were analyzed by frequency, factor analysis, reliability, confirmatory factor analysis and structural regression model analysis. Followed were the selected contributions of this study. First, the elderly¡¯s ageism experience was a predictor of suicidal thought. Second, the elderly¡¯s ageism experience was an antecedent of hopelessness and depression. Third, depression was a predictor of the elderly¡¯s suicidal thought. Fourth, the elderly¡¯s ageism experience was an antecedent of suicidal thought mediated by hopelessness and depression. The present study suggested our society needed control systems, against hierarchy enhancing ideology, such as ageism protection law and programs for intervening in the elderly¡¯s suicidal thought affected by ageism experience.
